Walking south
on the streets of Antigua, you can feel the earth begin
to slope gently upward beneath your feet as you look
wayward at the looming peak of the Agua volcano. Rising
up to 12,355 feet on the outskirts of Antigua, Agua's
dominant presence is mesmerizing.
Old Town Outfitters offers 1 or 2 day summit trips to
the crater of Agua for intermediate hikers. We recommend
our one day excursion which leaves from our shop at
5:00AM. Early morning vistas are definitely the best,
as it is possible to see the Pacific Ocean, Guatemala
City, and nearly eight other peaks on your way up. We
do offer an overnight trip as well, but recommend the
Fuego/Acatenango trip if an overnight excursion is what
you desire.
This climb is not for the weary as volcano climbing
is steep business (no flat sections). Changing weather
conditions can also add a challenge to this trip, which
usually requires 4-5 hours of climbing to reach the
crater and another 3 to descend. However, the rewards
are magnificent, and the views are heavenly.
